Internet feature on cars considered targets for hackers

DES MOINES, Iowa —Hackers are reaching beyond the computer screen, and now are controlling the highways.

Wireless carjacking is when hackers gain access to anything on the dashboard that is also connected to the Internet, including windshield wipers, steering wheels and even car brakes.

Two security experts put it to the test.

A video released on the Internet shows hackers controlling a Jeep through its U Connect feature.

Adam Brower, owner of a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, was excited until he learned that he may not always be in control each time he hops into the SUV.

“I just liked all of the new technology that it had and, obviously, the big touch screen,” he said. “Something I never thought about is that Internet access could potentially aim towards hackers.”

Owners of cars with hot spots who usually keep them on are more at risk to getting hacked.

“I just think to myself, ‘All the Internet stuff that I’ve done with my phone and connecting it to my car, what has that done to put my safety at risk?'” Brower said.

“Your car is a computer now,” said Bryce Walter of Des Moines Computer Repair.

Experts say there are ways to avoid tech-savvy intruders.

“You can prolong it by having a super strong password with lots of different characters: uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuations,” Walter said.

He says the longer the password, the longer it will take hackers to decrypt it.
