China Blames OPM Hack on Criminal Group, Arrests Hackers

China’s state run news agency, Xinhua, said that an investigation had determined that the hacking attack on OPM that compromised personal data on more than 20 million individuals was a criminal case as opposed to a government-sponsored attack. As another delegation of Chinese officials traveled to Washington this week for additional high-level talks on cyberespionage, The Washington Post reported that Chinese officials arrested hackers involved in the OPM hack, claiming that the breach was a criminal act and not a state-sponsored incursion. The first China-U.S. ministerial dialogue on fighting cyber crimes held here Tuesday yielded positive outcomes as the two sides worked hard to remove one of the major stumbling blocks to the development of the bilateral ties. Officials believe the hackers were contractors for China’s ministry of state security and went out of their way to conduct cyber attacks against OPM to mine data, according to the report. For the full article click here
