Cyberspace….The Final Frontier Becomes More Secure

CHARLESTON, WV -  Cyberspace… the galaxy of Facebook, Twitter, cat videos….. and a military boot camp? For the past several years the military has been conducting training exercises to battle hacking.  Members of the military in Charleston have participated in these exercises that include real life scenarios.

According to Master Sergeant Josh Spence, a cyber security specialist in the 130th Communications Flight. Two teams are made, Red and Blue.  Red are the hackers and Blue the military.  In the scenario Red tries to exploit the network allowing Blue to see what it looks like on the system, how to identify it, and how to respond correctly.

The military and government are working together to make sure techniques hackers develop are stopped quickly  and not shared so that they can’t be used to take out multiple networks.

Consumers are at risk of hackers just as much as the military and government.  Email is the weapon of choice.  Hackers use enticing deals and links to try and gain access to the consumers information when they click on the link.

Master Sgt. Spence says the best way to avoid this is to make sure that the email is one you’re expecting to receive from that person or company and when it comes to logging in to a site, never click the link in the email.  Go to the browser and login from the homepage of the site.

There may not be a military grade boot camp for us when it comes to combating hacking, but there are steps we can take to protect ourselves in….cyberspace.
