Cyber hackers attack City of Castroville

CASTROVILLE — The City of Castroville was attacked by cyber hackers back in April. City Administrator Mark Roath says an employee in the city’s finance department clicked on an email, and that’s when it all started.

“They used a legitimate company and a legitimate email,” added Roath. Roath says after the city employee opened the email, hackers were able to track their keystrokes and passwords.

“Then they initiated contact with the bank also using his email,” said Roath.  The cyber hackers attempted three wire transfers.

“The three wire transfers were for approximately $384,000,” Roath went on to say. The first wire transfer, Roath says, ended up in Africa.

“The Secret Service was able to stop the second transfer, and stop most of the money that was going on that transfer.”

The third wire transfer never went through, and right now the City of Castroville is in the process of making a claim to get back the money recovered by the federal government.

“Our intent and our goal is to be even when we resolve this issue,” Roath added.

The City of Castroville has taken extra security measures, including changing passwords, and designating a specific computer for wire transfers.

Roath says he hopes what happened to Castroville is an eye-opener for others. “We’ll go back and check their procedures and tighten them up if we can.”

Roath wants citizens of Castroville to know none of the personal information they have registered with the city was compromised.

Castroville hopes to get the city’s money back within the next several months.

Roath went on to say the FBI, Texas Rangers, and Secret Service are still investigating the case.
