Duluth Kids Train to Combat Cyber Hackers

Hackers will have a well-trained enemy in the future.

This week about two dozen kids in Duluth are learning to be the next generation of cyber security experts.

Lake Superior College is hosting a camp for 12- to 18-year-olds to learn about building computers, programming, security risks, and how to protect against hacks and cyber attacks.

Anup Parajuli, a faculty member at Lake Superior College and an instructor at the camp, says there’s a great need to train people in this field, and plenty of jobs to fill.

“There are scholarships available for people to continue on this track,” he says. “Our government is really pushing, because this is almost like another war, cyber war, and we need to be preparing the next generation of skills that we will need. And we need to start young.”

The LSC camp runs all week and is one of several camps across the country. They’re all funded by the National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation.
