FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Medical Informatics Engineering is the latest target of hackers.
“We’ve never been targeted, we’ve never had to respond to a cyber attack before,” Chief Operating Officer Eric Jones said.
Sensitive information like birth dates, names and Social Security numbers were exposed.
“To our knowledge this is the first this type of incident in our 20 years of being in business has occurred,” Jones said.
MIE creates web-based software for health care providers for electronic medical and health care records. The company’s clients include Concentra, which operates more than 300 medical centers in 38 states, Franciscan St. Francis Health Indianapolis, Rochester Medical Group in Detroit, Fort Wayne Neurological Center and Gynecology Center Inc. Fort Wayne. With several clients across the county investigators still don’t know just how many people are impacted by this cyber attack.
“It is our top priority to identify that information or that total count so that we can share that with others,” Jones said.
The FBI is also involved in the investigation working to identify the nature and scope of the attack. In a statement Special Agent Dave Crawford said, “Recent events underscore the persistent nature of cyber criminals and their unyielding efforts to target and steal sensitive personal information.”
Jones said MIE is working to better protect sensitive information. Right now, Jones said he does not know when they will know exactly who is impacted.
“Obviously there are things we need to do differently and we’re working on identifying what those new fixes should be,” Jones said.
MIE is offering credit monitoring and identity protection services to affected individuals, free of charge, for the next 24 months. You can call a toll-free hotline at 866-328-1987 if you have any questions about the attack. You can also report any suspected instances of identity theft to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center
