Hackers claiming to side with China in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea on late Monday defaced the website of the University of Santo Tomas’ museum.
Visitors to the museum website were greeted with an image of soldiers at war, with loud music playing in the background.
The site was still defaced as of 8:55 a.m. Tuesday. The Philippines, China and Vietnam are disputing territories in the South China Sea, some parts of which the Philippines refers to as the West Philippine Sea.
A profanity-laced message was posted on the defaced web page, with one “China 1937CN Team” claiming to be behind the incident.
It said Vietnam and the Philippines are only the “pawns” of the United States and Japan.
“South China Sea is China’s inherent territory, China’s territorial inviolability,” it added.
Retaliation?
But a check at www.1937cn.net, the URL indicated in the defaced UST Museum page, indicated the defacing could have been a retaliation for an earlier attack.
The site showed a screenshot of a defaced site dated May 30, supposedly by the “United Hackers of The Philippines and Vietnam,” with a message to China.
“We’ve come to protest against your unjust actions over the South China Sea, your alleged claim on maritime territories, and your oppressive acts has (sic) to stop! This can no longer be tolerated … Consider this as a warning, we will be back,” the message read.
The 1937cn.net site also posted a screenshot of a list of targeted Chinese sites, including those of the Chinese government.
Meanwhile, UST acknowledged that its museum website had been compromised, but added that the damage is limited only on the affected website.
“The University of Santo Tomas Museum Website has been compromised. However, the damage is limited to the said website,” the statement said. “We are currently addressing this unfortunate incident. Online access to this site is temporarily unavailable.”
UST asked the public to bear with them as they work to bring the website back online. — Joel Locsin and Bea Montenegro/RSJ, GMA News
