The incident comes days after the NCA announced six teenagers were arrested on suspicion of launching attacks using a service created by the group, which previously targeted Xbox and Playstation networks.
It is believed that Lizard Squad was simply establishing its revenge plan with the said hack.
The NCA website was down for more than two hours on Tuesday morning after being the subject of a Distributed Denial of Service attack, which involves overloading a website with too much traffic.
“We have a duty to balance the value of keeping our website accessible with the cost of doing so, especially in the face of a threat which can scale up endlessly“.
“Stressed out” was a reference to the program used by Lizard Squad, known as Lizard Stresser.
‘The measures we have in place at present mean that our site is generally up and running again within 30 minutes, though occasionally it can take longer.
The group has been very active in 2014, claiming credit for several high-profile hacking attacks, often targeting Sony.
Since then, the Lizard Squad have claimed to have hacked nude photographs of Taylor Swift, made jokes about MH370 during an attack on the Malaysia Airlines website, taken down Facebook, Tinder and Instagram.
The suspected targets of the tool conform predictably to the age-range of the suspects, and included a school, videogame companies and online retailers.
One expert recently told Computing that one of the best ways to protect your organisation against DDoS attacks is to monitor hacktivist forums for users discussing potential attacks. “By paying a comparatively small fee, tools like Lizard Stresser can cripple businesses financially and deprive people of access to important information and public services”, Tony Adams, from the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said at the time.
Officers are also visiting approximately 50 addresses linked to individuals registered on the Lizard Stresser website, but who are not now believed to have carried out attacks.
