Feds aim to bring Chinese military leaders to Pittsburgh for trial

With Chinese authorities reportedly rounding up computer hackers, federal officials in Pittsburgh said they look forward to bringing indicted Chinese military leaders to justice here someday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed in a trip to Washington last month to crack down on computer hackers in his country. The Washington Post reported Friday that China in recent weeks has rounded up a handful of unidentified hackers quietly at the request of American officials.

An American official told the Tribune-Review that the roundup did not include five members of the People’s Liberation Army indicted last year for stealing from U.S. companies.

David Hickton, U.S. Attorney for Western Pennsylvania, has vowed to bring them to Pittsburgh for trial. He did not respond to questions.

“I share Mr. Hickton’s view that someday we will get them here in Pittsburgh and they will stand trial on it,” FBI investigator Chris Geary told the Trib. “That’s why we did the case. We don’t do cases just to send a message. The case is a criminal case, and it is being pursued as that.”

Initial reports from federal government insiders sound positive, but it’s too early to know whether China is really serious about cracking down on computer hackers, said Jim Lewis, a security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. For the full article click here
