Experts: Hackers willing to hold info hostage are only a few clicks away

Imagine if all your stored data on your home PC or work computer is suddenly stolen and held hostage until you pay up.

Type or click on the wrong button and cyber criminals can go to work. That’s reportedly what happened to Maryland-based Medstar Health Incorporated in March. The hospital chain had its data encrypted, making it impossible to access files. The Baltimore Sun says the malware that shut the system down was a ransomware attack; where files are stolen and held hostage for money. Ed Zacharias is a legal data security expert representing several medical centers nationwide that have fallen prey to such crimes. “Healthcare unlike banking or some other industry often lags behind a little bit in their security infrastructure,” says Zacharias. “So they’re seen as easy targets for a lot of hackers.” For the full article click here
