Last year, a certain bug/security vulnerability took center stage, preying on devices that were still running on Android 5.1 Lollipop. Hence, folks needed to upgrade to Android 5.1.1 which would address the ‘Stagefright’ bug that would give hackers access to devices.
To recall, ‘Stagefright’ does its mischief when a hacker sends an MMS to a certain device. Aside from that, the bug could also penetrate phones by way of media files like MP3s or MP4s.
‘Stagefright’ takes advantage of the bugs in a mediaserver’s media parsing code found in devices. When simply parsing media, access is needed to read the file, though it does not immediately follow that one has to access certain components like the phone’s camera.
