Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s collection of luxury hotels, known as the Trump Hotel Collection, has been hit with a credit card breach, according to a statement released by Trump’s son EricTrump, who is executive vice president of development.
The security expert wrote that at least five of Trump’s hotel properties had been affected including Chicago, Las Vegas, Honolulu,Miami, New York and Los Angeles. After publicly offending Mexicans and Latinos in the U.S.by calling them “rapists” and saying they are “people that have lots of problems, ” the real estate tycoon is facing some trouble with his businesses, which (surprise, surprise) have a lot of Latinos involved.
Donald Trump’s hotel organization has been hacked, falling prey to a credit data breach, reports journalist Brian Krebs on his blogKrebs on Security.
In March the Mandarin Oriental hotel chain confirmed it was probing a potential breach that saw unauthorised access of credit card systems in a small number of its properties.
So yeah, it’s no big deal that the credit card you used to secure your $500-per-night hotel room in SoHo may have been snatched by criminals.
“Much like numerous other breaches we have seen targeting the retail and hospitality sector, this is not an attack that targeted a single hotel or store”. Additionally, 70 million “guest” records packed full of customers’ personal information were also swiped.
Krebs speculates that a recent increase in this kind of attack is because the United States will soon implement changes to credit card security, moving from magnetic strip cards to chip and PIN.
Payment systems used by Trump Hotels might have been compromised, allowing copies of credit cards to fall into the hands of fraudsters, it is feared. “They really are lagging behind the rest of the world in this regard”.
But by October 2015, merchants in the U.S. that have not already installed card readers that accept chip-based cards will assume responsibility for the cost of fraud from counterfeit cards.
