Be scared: Here’s how hackers can take over your car

A few weeks ago, WIRED’s Andy Greenberg published a story that made our collective hearts skip a beat: “Hackers remotely kill a jeep on the highway — with me in it.” In his story, Greenberg detailed how terrifying it was to lose control of his car to two hackers—even though he had invited them to hack the jeep in the first place.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have been demonstrating vulnerabilities in vehicle security for years in an effort to raise awareness, for drivers and auto companies, of how serious poor security can be. “If consumers don’t realize this is an issue, they should, and they should start complaining to carmakers…This might be the kind of software bug most likely to kill someone,” Miller told Greenberg.

Recently, in presentation during this year’s Black Hat conference in Vegas, Miller and Valasek walked through the hack in a presentation. Fusion’s Tim Pool was there, and describes it as “hilarious, impressive—and terrifying.” Watch his full reaction above
