Chinese hackers have also been implicated in the massive hacking of the US government’s personnel office disclosed this year.
Personal data belonging to some 22 million current and former United States government employees, relatives, job applicants and contractors was stolen in June’s cyber hack.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey told the intelligence committee there was no immediate indication the stolen data had been used adversely.
There was no destruction or manipulation of the data, the intelligence head explained.
Clappers warning is one of the starkest to date about a new and potentially debilitating form of hacking.
Instead, “we foresee an ongoing series of low-to-moderate level cyber attacks from a variety of sources over time, which will impose cumulative costs on U.S. economic competitiveness and national security”, he wrote.
