Canada’s Mounties Are Joining the Fight Against Hackers

The move could set up a political showdown between the Mounties and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) took a big step towards effectively combatting cyber crime on Wednesday, announcing plans to create a division dedicated to investigating online threats. Designed to protect to the country’s federal government and other key assets—including business trade secrets and critical infrastructure—the national police force’s Ottawa-based team will consist of as many as 40 new investigators. The division will take five years and $22.5 million to build, reports Reuters.

The team is being created as part of the RCMP’s Cybercrime Strategy, which was also released Wednesday. The new cyber crime team, which will consist of both police officers and civilians, is the first item in the 15-point plan that also outlines the creation of a new “dedicated intelligence unit,” as well as strategies for cooperating with other international bodies, including Interpol, Europol, and the Five Eyes, an intelligence alliance comprised of Australia, New Zealand, the U.K, the U.S., and Canada. For the full article click here
