Is your GoPro spying on you?

Amarillo, TX – Unwelcome eyes may be spying on you through a popular video-recording gadget.

GoPros and similar devices are great tools to capture video in action. They also make watching and sharing that video easy on your smartphone or computer through internet connection capabilities. However, it is that connection that also makes them vulnerable to cyber criminals.

“They transmit video over the internet. Well of course, if data is transmitted over the internet, hackers are going to find a way to get that information and to hack that stuff,” said Andrew Brandt with All Star Computer Service.

Hackers can access your GoPro through its wireless connection even if you turn the camera off.

“These hackers are able to get in, run an encryption test on that password, find something that is really easily hackable and once they are in, they are in,” said Brandt. “They can see your camera and see you from your camera.”

It sounds scary, but there is a simple solution. When connecting your device to the Internet, set up a secure, strong password. “Whenever we set up passwords for customers, we actually tell them not to use a password but actually a passphrase, such as “myanniversaryis0610″ so that it is not as easily hackable as just one word,” said Brandt.

As more and more devices come with Internet capabilities, Brandt said it is important to make sure you secure each one with strong passwords.
